On the afternoon of Tuesday January 6, the day that the Church remembers Christ's baptism in the Jordan, faithful from around Massachuesetts braved the cold and gathered together at the bay near St. George Cathedral to bless the waters. In the early Church, this feast of Theophany was the major feast (second only to Pashka), years before the Church began to celebrate the Lord's nativity on December 25.
Clergy and faithful gathered in a nearby parking lot to formally process to the shore of Pleasure Bay. The service was celebrated right on the beach, culminating with the tossing of the cross three times into the water. Following the service, all in attendance were invited to St George Cathedral for refreshments and fellowship.
